The Wiener Lichtblicke 2023 were spectacularly opened on August 31 in and in front of the Palace of Justice, at Grete-Rehor-Park. Over 500 people of diverse ages, languages, and cultures attended and contributed to the event’s success. Every day until October 31 — during the night and early morning hours — seven permanent and ten popup chromotopes transformed urban spaces in Vienna into artistic oases of political culture.
Under the artistic direction of Victoria Coeln, new chromotopes are created each year, becoming threshold- and barrier-free light stages for everyone: for an active civil society, for slow activism, and for cultural diplomacy. Embedded in the beauty of light and art, current and historical rules of democratic processes are tested, played out, explored, and renegotiated in public spaces. In this sense, Lichtblicke sees itself as a festival of open spaces for more light, art, and political culture.
