On the 30th anniversary of the day of the Decision, a ring of light unfolded in the inner city ring of Leipzig. On October 9 2019, in the cold and rain like 30 years ago, again 70,000 people gathered at the Augustusplatz to follow the historical path of the demonstrators in the autumn of 1989. “The evening of 9 October 2019 had almost mystical moments for me, the many people and the rain– it was almost like 1989 as it had rained every Monday (and probably also in between the weeks) and the people 30 years later were like a closed unity, in spite of rain, despite of Halle, actually unique in our time”. On the 30th anniversary of the day of the “DECISION,” a Lichtring (ring of light) unfolded on the inner city ring of Leipzig. On the evening of October 9, 2019, in the same weather – cold and rainy as on October 9, 1989 – 70.000 people gathered in downtown Leipzig to follow the historical path of the demonstrators in the autumn of 1989.
Due to the attack in the neighboring city Halle a few hours before the festival of light, in the morning of the reconciliation festival Yom Kippur, the most important message of October 9, 1989, exactly 30 years later, received additional explosiveness: NO VIOLENCE! – Many now wanted to demonstrate for a non-violent society. After the impressive speeches at Augustusplatz they went around the ring, tracing their fear, the courage and hope of the revolution and shared their memories with others. The LIGHT RING was intended to form the solemn framework and new open spaces for the many memories, experiences and sensations.
