Light Spaces — Leipzig

The historical Monday demonstrations of Autumn 1989 and the memorable demands expressed on the banners of the protestors form the basis for the openings and designs of the six Light Spaces. They will begin to unfold along important historical sites of the Leipzig Ring on September 4, extending a little bit further on each of the following Mondays. On October 9, light interventions will reach across the entire Ring, transforming it into an avenue of light, a participatory Light Ring.

The preceding light spaces, part of the participatory concept of the Light Festival Leipzig 2019, should stimulate more and more to the joint celebration of the revolution in Leipzig 1989. From September 4, the historic date of the “Double Monday Demonstration”, the first of the fall in 1989, suzessive opened six light spaces, each remaining until October 9. The light spaces and the opening performances referred to the appropriation of space and self-empowerment as well as the diversity of the demonstrators, in former days and today. The slogans of 1989 served as an impulse. Already from May to August, this year’s concept was presented in the Light Studio in the MdbK (Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig), where the openings were partly developed, rehearsed together and also tested in the MdbK’s public context while chromatic light shadow projections of the visitors and the performers could be recorded for the openings of the light spaces and the light ring.
